SAM Dow Jones Sustainability Index

To ensure a solid reference point for our actions and achievements, we measure our progress on our 'Brewing a Better Future' journey through the SAM Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

From 2007 to 2009, HEINEKEN was ranked as the leading brewer globally and the leading beverage company in Europe within the SAM Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Launched in 1999, this index is the first global index tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Companies are selected annually for the DJSI based on the SAM Assessment. The construction of the DJSI is strictly rule-based which applies to the inclusion and exclusion of companies in these indexes. Index components are monitored daily for newly arising critical issues.

The annual review of the DJSI family is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labor practices. It accounts for general as well as industry specific sustainability criteria for sectors defined according to the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB).
